- Gandhi was the head of the Indian independence movement up until the under World War 2
- Used Nonviolent Resistance (Hunger Strikes, Marches, Etc...)
- Main strategy was to get the people to stop relying on imported goods from Britain

- Was Nicknamed Mahatma "The Great Souled One"
- Protested against unjust laws such as the Rowlatt Acts
- Was one of the few people calling for co-existence with Hindus and Muslims together.

- After the war ended, a worldwide process occurred in which Britain granted independence to all of it's major colonies: beginning in India
- Muslim League excluded from discussion of the coalition.
- Resulted in largest mass migration in history (10-12 million) and death of 200-400 thousand people.
- Muslim population forced West into Pakistan.

- Mahatma Gandhi proceeded to encourage nonviolent protests such as boycotting British companies and institutions.
- India was in a "state of great tension", forcing Britain to help India attain freedom.

- In 1947, India was granted freedom as the two separate states of Pakistan and India
- Gandhi's movements soon influenced other British colonies in Africa
