Rizal Leaves Japan

  • He left Yokohama on the 13th of April on board the steamer "Belgic"
  • He met and befriended a Japanese named Tetcho Suehiro

Rizal in New York

  • May 13, 1888 - Rizal reached New York
  • He describe New York as a great city.
  • He was able to visit the relics of George Washington and saw the majestic Brooklyn Bridge as well as the huge Statue of Liberty
  • Rizal left New York on board the "City of Rome" on May 16

Rizal's description of the ship and his voyage

"So that you may have an idea of the size of this monster. I'll tell you that it has three chimneys, consumes three tons of coal daily. It is more than 200 varas long and 18 varas wide, and has 12,000 horse power for which it has 63 boilers. The promenade deck alone is 140 varas long. A newspaper is published during the voyage for the benefit of the passengers are 604. We have had a bad trip, very rough sea, excessive wind, much sea-sickness, for which reasons we spent eight days and hours on the trip."

Rizal met Tetcho Suehiro

  • Tetcho Suehiro is a Japanese journalist and champion of human rights
  • Rizal meet Tetcho Suehiro in the Ship Belgic on April 1888
  • They quicly became friends both of them have missions to free their own country from oppression and tyranny.
  • Rizal became a great help to him acting as his interpreter
  • They went on their separate ways in London on December 1, 1888
  • Tetcho was so impressed to Rizal and describes Rizal in his travel diary as "an open-herted man"

Arrival in San Francisco

  • May 6 1888 - Rizal left San Francisco for Oakland
  • May 7 1888 - he had a good breakfast at Reno Nevada "The Biggest Little City in the World"
  • He passed through the states of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, and Illinois
  • May 12 1888 - he stop for some time at the famous Niagara Falls and describe it as the most splendid falls he had ever seen
  • May 7 - 13 1888 - Rizal wrote in his diary the beautiful memories and describe the places he saw as "majestic and beautiful"
  • Saturday, April 28, 1888 - The steamer Belgic docked at San Francisco
  • American health authorities did not let the passengers to land for one week because of the rumored cholera epidemic
