Factors That Influence Blood Alcohol Concentration

4 Stages of Alcoholism

Alcohol- The drug found in wine,beer,and liquor that causes intoxication.

Intoxication-Physical and mental changes produced by drinking alcohol.

Blood Alcohol Concentration-Amount of alcohol in a person's blood.

Binge Drinking-Drinking 5 or more drinks in one sitting.

Cirrhosis-Deadly disease that replaces healthy liver tissue with scar tissue.

Hangover-Uncomfortable physical effects caused by excessive alcohol use.

Dementia-Decrease in brain function that includes personality changes and memory loss.

Alcohol Abuse-Drinking too much,too often,or at inappropriate times.

Alcoholism-Disease that causes a person to lose control of his or her drinking behavior.

Enabling-Helping an addict avoid the negative consequences of his or her behavior.

Codependency-A family member or a friend sacrifices his or her own needs to meet the needs of an addict.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome-A mother's consumption of alcohol during pregnancy.

Designated Driver-Person chooses not to drink alcohol so that he or she can safely drive them self or others safely.

3.Dependance- Drinker's body begins to need the alcohol to function normally

4.Alcoholism- Addicted to alcohol and they cannot control their drinking and put drinking before everything else.

Age- Teens who start drinking before they're 21

Social Environment- Peer pressure,Persuasive advertising

Genetics- Alcohol use runs in the family

Risk Taking Personality- People who are impulsive and enjoy taking risks

-Drinking to deal with emotions

-Changing friends,personal habits,and interests

-Being defensive about drinking

-Feeling depressed

-Drinking more for the same high

-Drinking alone

-Drinking to get drunk

-Experiencing memory lapses as a result of drinking alcohol

After an excessive amount of drinking

it can cause the area of the brain that

controls breathing and heart rate to

become dangerously depressed and the

heart and brain may stop working

If person is passed out from

drinking:

-Call 911 immediately

-Turn victim on side

(So if they vomit they don't choke

on it)

Hangover

Symptoms of a hangover:

-Severe dehydration

-Headache

-Nausea

-Vomiting

Short Term effects on the body

Cause person to feel nauseated and vomit

Irritates the mouth,throat,esophagus, and stomach-

Makes the heart work harder-

Widens blood vessels making the heart work harder to pump blood through the wider vessels

Widened blood vessels making the person feel warm,but may actually be getting to cold

Body looses heat-

Liver works harder-

Liver breaks down toxic substances (Alcohol),To neutralize any poisonous effects.Liver can only break down one alcoholic drink per hour.Drinking more than that amount can cause alcohol to build up and stress the liver

Breaking down alcohol requires water, which is taken from the rest of the body including the brain (can kill brain cells)

Dehydration-

So be cautious and aware of the risks when consuming alcohol.

Brain-

Brain damage,Dead brain cells

Withdrawal- Stopping use of a drug to which the body is addicted

Heart-

Irregular heartbeat,high blood pressure(hypertension),

Enlargement of heart,Anemia

Symptoms:

Diminished immune system function,which

makes fighting off diseases difficult

-Extreme nervousness

-Headaches

-Chills

-Nausea

-Seizures

-Uncontrollable Shaking

Driving under the influence (DUI)

Drinking, Driving, and the Law

☻- Alcohol use is illegal for anyone under 21 years old

- DUI- anyone caught with a blood alcohol concentration of .08

percent or greater

- Zero Tolerance- Illegal for anyone under 21 to have any alcohol

in their system (Even if it's under .08 percent)

- Violating zero tolerance laws can result in loss of driver's license,

expensive fines, and community service.

Getting Home Safe and Sober

- Don't drink

- Plan ahead

- Have an arrangement with someone to pick you up if you need a ride home.

- Call a cab
