"Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and the open space of the scar.Ralph stood, one hand against a grey trunk and there, screwed up his eyes against the shimmering water".
The quote states that there was darkness behind them and now there is shimmering water. When something new starts everything in the past is darkness in comparison to the new beginning.
When the conch was found on the beach and sounded it caused the other children to come out of hiding. This eventually leads to the era of competition and co-operation.Without the introduction of other characters and an antagonist the story wouldn't get very far,so a real plot would be unable to fully develop or even develop at all. Not only does the beach start new beginnings but the items found on it do too.
"The edge of the lagoon became a streak of phosphorescence that advance minutely, as the great wave of the tide flowed. The clear water mirrored the clear sky and the angular bright constellations. The line of the phosphorescence bulged about the sand grains and little pebbles; it held them each in a dimple of tension, then suddenly accepted them with an inaudible syllable and moved on".
The horrific murder of Simon was a huge turn of events and started a period of grief and doubt. When Simon died on the BEACH he was washed away and was surrounded by bright lights.Once again a new era is started on the beach.
The beach symbolizes new beginnings on both the island for the boys and also for the plot.Without the beach the book would lack a main setting for new beginnings to take place and if it were to be replaced by any form of substitution, it wouldn't be as effective.
"Ralph grasped the idea and hit the shell with air from his diaphragm. Immediately the thing sounded...A child had appeared among the palms..."
The beach is a symbol of a new beginning on the island.Everytime something major happens on the island it usually starts or is celebrated on the beach. In fact the beach itself is like a new beginning because the water washes away the sand and allows the sand underneath to have its new beginning on top.
