Naturalism developed in Europe in the late 19th century, around 1860, and continued to develop throughout the early 20th century. When it was first developed, naturalism did not last long, but it's popularity returned in the latter part of the 20th century and today, inspires many plays and films.

Just made this new type of theatre. it's called naturalism! It creates an illusion of real life on stage. It has a secular world-view (no ghosts or monsters gonna be all up in my plays) it's contemporary (nobody gonna be flyin on my stage) the speech patterns are like every day speech and simple to understand (so bring your friends) and the actors love to recreate the normal life of average, every-day people! They move, talk, sound, eat, they're just like normal people!

Criticisms

omg guys, they're calling me the Father of Naturalism now!!! #Look at me now

Many critics believed that the naturalistic theatre did not contain substance. Russian director, Vsevolod Yemelyevich Meyerhold, believed there was a lack of mystery in the theatre, which was highly detrimental, “The Naturalistic Theatre denies that the spectator has the ability to finish a painting...for Mystery had disappeared and dreams [are] abused.”
