1980's

1960's

The "Twist" was the most popular dance back in the 60's. People thought it became so popular because it helped them let go of the Cold War tension.

Pink Floyd was one of the first bands to play psychedelic music. Long instrumental solos and weird electronic effects were a crazy part of the bands style

1970's

Funk music refers to a type of dance music that was particularly popular during the late 1960s to the late 70s. Funk music devolved from different types of African-American music such as blues and soul.

Later on, funk music was mixed with disco music and by the mid 1970s, the music dominated the airwaves with songs like "More Than A Woman," "Night Fever," "Stayin' Alive" and "You Should Be Dancing" by the Bee Gees being played

Throughout the decade, R&B, hip hop and urban music in general were becoming popular. Rap was especially successful in the latter part of the decade. These urban genres, rap and hip hop particularly, would continue their rise in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s. The Now that's what i call music CD's started in 1983 as well.

Hip hop is very popular today. The music is marked by the bass and the beats being very important, and with rapping as the vocals. Which is why rap is a part of hip hop and therefore, its styles are also a part of hip hop music.

1990's

Similarly to the 1980s, rock music was also very popular in the 1990s, but industrial rock and other alternative rock music took over as the most popular music of the decade. Electronic music, which had risen in popularity in the 1980s, grew highly popular in the 1990s.
