feminist

Hermia: She is confident in what she wants for her future, she stays strong and true to herself. She is commanded by her father to marry a man Demetrius who she does not love. She decides to go against her family because she fell in love with a man named Lysander.

Counterargument

My counterargument was that Shakespeare may have seemed like he was an Anti feminist because of the characters Hoppoltya and Titiana from A Midsumer Night's Dream. Reason being is because of how they were portrayed. They are shown to have their independence taken away from them.

counterarguement

Feminist

Titiana: She is the queen of fairyland and she is put under a spell by her own husband because he is jealous of a little boy who she is caring for as her own son. Because of the spell her husband puts her under she loses her ability to make her own decisions an fight for herself and her independence is lost as well. Though Shakespeare may seem like he is anti feminist because of these two characters the three other female charcacters prove that he is feminists.

Shakespeare, Feminist or Antifeminist

My Topic

Lady Macbeth also proves that Shakespeare is more of a feminist because he makes her a powerful and controling characger especially over her husband. She puts down her husband and belittles him which makes them switch the normal gender roles. (she's like the man in the relationship) Usually women are "suppose" to be obiedient to their husbands and have no say but Lady Macbeth complietely goes against that and her husband is easily munipulated by her. She has the power to convince him to murder people.

counterargument characters

For my essay I argued that Shakespeare was more of a feminist than an anti feminist because if the characters, Hermia from A midsummer Night's Dream, Juliet from Romeo and Juliet and Lady Macbeth from The Tragedy of Macbeth. The reason why I chose these three women were because they showed a great deal of independence, gender equality, bravery and the went against the usual gender roles of their society.

Hopplyta: She was an Amazon queen who was a leader with much power and independence. She lost all of those aspects when she surrenders herself to the Duke of Athens. "I wooded thee with my sword I won thy love doing thee injuries." This was said by Th eDuke of Athens and basically he is telling her that because of his greatness he won her as if she was a trophy. He is treating her like an object rather than a leader.
