Ellis Island

IMMIGRATION

To move from one country to a new country

Not everyone went through Ellis Island

It is a small island in New York Harbor.

Ellis Island is located in the upper bay just

off the New Jersey coast.

IMMIGRANT

A person who moves to a new country

First- and second-class immigrants submitted to a brief shipboard inspection and then disembarked at the piers in New York or New Jersey, where they passed through customs.

People in third class were transported to Ellis Island. They underwent medical and legal inspections to ensure they didn’t have a contagious disease or some condition that would make them a burden to the government.

Only two percent of all immigrants were denied entrance into the U.S.

WHAT IS ELLIS ISLAND?

Ellis Island was the first and largest federal immigrant processing station, receiving over 12 million future Americans

Is Ellis Island the same island the Statue of Liberty is on?

No, there are two separate islands, Liberty Island and Ellis Island
