Melbourne Project

Excursion Reflections: Day 1

  • EUREKA TOWER – The first of our excursions was a trip to the Eureka tour, where we were given the opportunity to go out onto the Sky Deck if we wanted to, which Phoebe, Kyra, and Nikola all did.
  • STATE LIBRARY – The next excursion we went on was to the State Library, where we were given a very informative and interesting tour, finding out about the history of the library, exploring the long-standing Kelly Gang exhibition, and how the Library actually operates.
  • Better understand what makes Melbourne the way it is
  • Insight into the history of Melbourne
  • Understand more of the many cultures in Melbourne
  • Educate us about the city we live in

What makes Melbourne Melbourne?

  • Extremely culturally diverse
  • Drawn from countries all round the world

Melbourne is a very culturally diverse city. Everything Melbourne is about is thanks to the large amount of cultures that influence everything. Architecture, food, fashion, and even the people themselves.

Steps Towards Final Product

Excursion Reflections: Day 2

  • Brainstormed ideas as a group
  • Divided our stem questions
  • Prepared several meals for a recipe book

Phoebe Evans, Emily Hughes, Kyra Boschma, Nikola Wellington and Sasha Connell 9H

CAFÉ TOUR – The café tour was less formal, and led by Ms. Haughey. It consisted of walking through the streets in the CBD and looking at the different types of cafes and bars, noting how they change through different parts of the city.

CHINA TOWN – Our tour through China Town was also very interesting. Led by a guide, we walked around China Town, stopping at various places to learn more about things like feng shui, why doors directly in front of T intersections are almost always facing side-on, and the difference between the Chinese definition of sweets and our definition of sweets.

Where Is Multiculturalism Most Visible?

  • Areas such as Chinatown, Little Bourke Street, Greek Precinct, "Little Italy"
  • Australia's "coffee culture"
  • In the streets everywhere

FINAL OUTCOME

Excursion Reflections: Day 3

  • Each chose a culture represented in Melbourne
  • Found a meal from chosen culture
  • Cooked meal at Sasha's
  • Recipe book
  • VIC MARKET – The excursion to the Queen Victoria market was based, primarily, in the food and deli section of the Market, instead of the main, more commercial section, where we all had worksheets to fill out, with questions such as “What can you buy at the offal shop?”. Finding that out was a fun experience.
  • CHOCOLATE TOUR – Our final tour of the Melbourne Project was the Chocolate Tour, when we were taken around the city by a tour guide, to various chocolate stores, such as Koko Black, Haigh’s Chocolate, and Lindt. We were given a few free samples of chocolate, including some of the darkest chocolate – 100% cocoa – that you can buy.

Why Did We Choose the Topic?

  • Talked about things we’d enjoy
  • One of the defining features of Melbourne
  • Many different aspects to research
  • Significance of culture
