Meaning & Summary

The meaning of ¨Scars To Your Beautiful¨ by Alessia Cara, sets a tone through the lyrics that are powerful towards society's expectations for young teens to look like unrealistic models. She also displays a theme of acceptance and appearance through the use of imagery, diction, and recurring allusions to covergirl that illustrate the masking of reality. The lyrics describe and illustrate a subject that is very prominent in the world and is something many generations of young adults focus on. Alessia Cara presents these ideas within a set of lyrics that speak directly to the issue society faces. With the use of imagery and diction Alessia Cara is able to more intensely emphasize the theme of acceptance and appearance within young teens.

Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara

She just wants to be beautiful

She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits

She craves attention, she praises an image

She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are

And you don't have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful (repeat)

About Alessia Cara...

Oh, she don't see the light that's shining

Deeper than the eyes can find it, maybe we have made her blind

So she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away

Cause cover girls don't cry after their face is made

Growing up in Ontario, Canada, Alessia Cara wrote all different genres of poetry and taught herself how to play the guitar. She rose to fame on youtube by uploading videos of herself playing and singing along to covers with the acoustic guitar. Signing to EP Entertainment and Def Jam Records, Cara hit the charts with a new single ¨Here¨ from her debut album Know-It-All. Which was released on June 17th, 2015.

She don't see her perfect, she don't understand she's worth it

Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface, oh, oh

So to all the girls that's hurting, let me be your mirror

Help you see a little bit clearer the light that shines within

But there's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are

And you don't have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

And you don't have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

And there's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark

You should know you're beautiful just the way you are

And you don't have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

And you don't have to change a thing

The world could change its heart

No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

She has dreams to be an envy, so she's starving

You know, cover girls eat nothing

She says "beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything"

"What's a little bit of hunger?"

"I can go a little while longer," she fades away

No better you than the you that you are

No better life than the life we're living

Thesis:

I chose ¨Scars To Your Beautiful¨ because of the deepth of the lyrics about a young teen who struggles to learn about the acceptance of self beauty. The lyrics are written in a powerful tone to illustrate the girl's feelings.

Music

The tone of Alessia Cara’s song ‘’Scars To Your Beautiful‘’ is powerful towards society's expectations for young teens to look like models. She displays a theme of acceptance and appearance through the use of imagery and recurring allusions to covergirl that illustrate the masking of reality.

The lyrics set a mood to the song which dictates a slow, sad beat. Yet, Alessia Cara twists the music with the words and creates an upbeat tempo for ¨Scars To Your Beautiful¨. The musicality of the song does not blend or fit together because the song is written as a slow melody and the music added to it makes it an uplifting song.

Imagery

¨Sculpted by the sculpter¨
