Ossicular Chain Dislocation
What is Ossicular Chain Dislocation
- The dislocation of the middle ear bones
- Leads to hearing loss because sound cannot be transmitted correctly
The Part of the ear that is affected:
- The inner ear(cochlea) is affected
- Sounds reach the ear drum but are incompletely transferred by the ossicular chain in the middle ear and fail to reach the inner ear
Causes of This Hearing Loss
- A fracture of the temporal bone
- Chronic ear infections
- Cholesteatoma, which is a benign tumor caused by the build up of skin cells in the ear
- Congenital ear malformation, which is when the ossicular bones are not formed properly
- Hereditary
- Sounds cannot be transmitted properly
- Disrupts the passage of sound waves through the middle ear
- Causes conductive hearing loss
TREATMENT
- Hearing can be restored by the surgical ear procedure called "Ossicular Chain Reconstruction"
- The procedure reestablishes the connection between the eardrum and the inner ear
- Reconstructs hearing bones
- Goes through the ear canal and reconstructs using bone cement
