- Signed in 1785 , in Hopewell South Carolina was the first treaty between Americans and Cherokees
- Signed by Benjamin Hawkins and the Cherokee Indians
- Gave out western boundaries for white settlement
- Could not step foot on Cherokee land
What is the Compact of 1802 ?
- Compact made by U.S. President , Thomas Jefferson, in 1802 of the state of Georgia.
Compact-is an agreement, treaty or contract. Usually for States and Territories.
- Involved the Cherokee, State of Georgia, and the Federal Government.

- Thomas Jefferson signed the compact, buying all Indian land in Georgia.
- Then, Georgia land extended from Alabama to Mississippi
- At the time, Creeks and Cherokees lived on Georgia property
What the Georgians did not realized was that they violated two Important treaties to the Native Americans.
