Ralph - Democratic Leader
Vote! For the . . .
The Conch allows people to Voice their opinions without breaking order
A continuous cycle!
The Conch gives the people the right to . . . . .
The development of the conch in The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, becomes a symbol of civilization and order for the boys on the island.
“The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (Golding 181)
This cite describes how little power the conch held at the end of the novel. The conch throughout The Lord of the Flies has gradually grown weaker and weaker; the boys and Jack have ignored Ralph and the authority the conch has given him as chief. When the conch shattered it was like the boys recollection of society and civilization shattered too!
In conclusion the conch changes the way it does because as soon as the boys started to ignore the rules and the conch’s power that’s when the society and order started to crumble.
“This toy of voting was almost as pleasing as the conch. Jack started to protest but the clamor changed from the general wish for a chief to an election by acclaim of Ralph himself. None of the boys could have found a good reason for this; what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy while the most obvious leader was Jack. But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart.” (Golding 22)
This passage shows that Ralph is starting to appear to the others as a democratic leader, Ralph later on in the chapter suggests that everyone should have a chance to talk and voice their opinion. In result to this suggestion the conch is passed around to the boys that want to have an input to the assembly, all the boys have an equal right to talk during the assembly and to have an opinion or a suggestion. The conch then symbolizes freedom of speech. The conch gives Ralph authority over the other boys, especially Jack; Jack does not have the conch so when the boys listen to what he has to say they end up questioning his theories about the island.
“If I blow the conch and they don’t come back; then we’ve had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals. We’ll never get rescued.” “If you don’t blow, we’ll soon be animals anyway. I can’t see what they’re doing but I can hear”(Golding 92).
This passage displays that the boys are starting to spend more time with Jack hunting; the boys are ignoring the rules and the conch more and more each day, the boys want to have fun and not follow the authority that the conch holds or Ralph’s rules.
“We’ll have rules!” he cried excitedly. “Lots of rules! Then when anyone breaks ‘em----“. (Golding 33)
This quote from The Lord of the Flies shows the beginning of a society they’ve figured out that they should all follow the rules that Ralph has given them, so they won’t all be running around like children; their rules are basically their law. The conch is great at this point in The Lord of the Flies, because it has made Ralph rise to power. The conch allows Ralph to have his authority making both Ralph and the conch respectable.
“I got the conch!” said Piggy indignantly. “Ralph--- they ought to shut up, oughtn’t they? You shut up, you littleuns! What I mean is that I don’t agree about this here fear. Of course there isn’t nothing to be afraid of in the forest. Why—I been there myself! You’ll be talking about ghosts and such things next. We know what goes on and of there’s something wrong, there’s someone to put it right.” (Golding 83-84)
This cite shows that the boys on the island are starting to break the rules and disrespect the conchs authority; the boys are beginning to talk over others during the assemblies and are starting to ignore the conch method, which is where the conch is passed around and everyone gets to speak without being interrupted or talked over.
The Conch represents civilization, order and authority. Ralph used the Conch to gather the children to assemblies- which unites the boy's island civilization. Also, when the boys had these assemblies they needed to hold the Conch in order to speak, "He held the Conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. . . . 'give him the Conch to speak and he wont be interrupted except by me'"(33.) This keeps the boys from talking over one an other and breaking into chaos. As well as, allowing people- like Piggy- with good ideas to speak. Lastly, when the boys have debates and the conversation gets heated it keeps order. This allows them to figure out their problems without getting frustrated.

A) In the novel, Lord of the Flies the protagonist- Ralph represents a democratic leader in society. This is clearly displayed through the use of his actions, such as him allowing the boys to have a voice, holding assemblies, and preforming duties that benefit the people rather than just himself. Simon starts talking to Ralph at an assembly, he states, "'All the same- in the forest. I mean when you're hunting- not gathering fruit, of course, but when you're on your own-' He paused for a moment, not sure if Ralph would take him seriously. 'Go on'(53.) This is just one of the many examples of Ralph allowing, and encouraging the advice, or concerns of the others. This brings out his inner democratic leader. These ideas were brought up by members of our class. Every member in our group strongly agrees that the resource is reliable and the character clearly represents a democratic leader.
Best passages that illustrates how the character symbolizes what he does!
“He lifted the conch. 'Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things'... 'Let's have a vote.' 'Yes!' 'Vote for chief!' 'Lets vote-'” (22)
Ralph shows excellent democratic leadership in this quote. When he lifts up the conch everyone listens to what he has to say. When Ralph uses the conch, him and the conch symbolizes democracy because Ralph allows people to vote for chief. Ralph also gives the boys the opportunity to voice their opinion to who should be the leader, by letting them vote for chief. This is an example on how Ralph and the conch symbolize democratic leadership.
“'There was a ship. Out there. You said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!' He took a step toward Jack, who turned and faced him. 'They might have seen us. We might have gone home-'” (70)
In this quote it shows that Ralph has good intentions for the people on the island. As a democratic chief, Ralph's main priority is to think of the boys and get rescued. Ralph has good intentions because he uses the words “we” and “us” when he speaks. This means that he wants everybody to get saved off the island. Being a democratic leader a person has to think about their people and not about what benefits his or herself.
“'All right. Who wants Jack for chief?' With dreary obedience the choir raised their hands. 'Who wants me?' Every hand outside the choir except Piggy's was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. 'I'm chief then.'” (23)
Another way Ralph's democratic is the way he became chief. The boys on the island voted for him, therefore, Ralph was elected to be chief. Unlike Jack who becomes leader by luring the boys to hunt with him in his tribe.
“The boys began to babble. Only Piggy could have the intellectual daring to suggest moving the fire from the mountain. 'So we'll have the fire down here,' said Ralph” (129)
When Ralph listened to Piggy's opinion it showed that Ralph is democratic. Ralph considers other's views as well as uses others ideas. Ralph knows that other people on the island have good ideas, therefore being chief, he needs to take it in account for.
“The meeting hummed and was silent. 'And another thing. We can't have everybody talking at once. We'll have to have 'Hands up' like at school.' He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. 'Then I'll give the conch.' 'Conch?' 'That's what this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking.'” (33)
This passage demonstrates Ralph being a democratic leader. Ralph believes in the freedom of speech because he will give the conch to a person that wants to voice their opinion. Once the person has the conch nobody can speak over that person. Ralph also believes in equality because he lets everyone have the opportunity to speak their mind.
