Supermarkets Vs Local Farmer's Markets

Quality of Farmer's Markets

1. Quality and variety of produce

2. Affordability to a large portion of the economic spectrum

3. Availability (daily versus once a week)

4. Centrality of location

5. Physical layout

  • Locally transported fruits and vegetables are often fresher (Yes, it tastes better guys)
  • Many fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when allowed to ripen naturally
  • Meat from animals raised sustainably on pasture is also more nutritious – for example, grass-fed beef is higher in “good” cholesterol (and lower in “bad”), higher in vitamins A and E, lower in fat, and contains more antioxidants than factory farmed beef
  • Doesn’t pollutethe air/lakes/rivers/oceans or release carbon into the atmosphere (global warming), degrade soil quality, inducing erosion,
  • less (or no) agricultural chemicals: such as pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones, all of which are common in industrial farm products
  • Minimal to no packaging for their farm products
  • Minimized transport to consumers which promotes energy conservation

Definition of a Local Market; markets in which the products sold are locally produced, i.e. a farmers market

Tiers of Food Distribution

The money that is spent with local farmers and growers all stays close to home and is reinvested with businesses and services in your community.

Sadly, the American farmer is a vanishing breed- fewer than 1,000,000,000 people (less than 1%) of Americans claim farming as a primary occupation.

It’s no wonder-- it’s hard to make a living when the industrial farmer (get less than 10 cents of every retail food dollar.)

Which system do you support?

By buying locally, the middleman disappears and the farmer gets full retail price, in turn helping farmers continue to farm! We hope that the next time you need to buy anything, be it food or anything else, you’ll buy local whenever possible.

Definition of a global market: markets in which food can travel long distances from where it is grown in order to be sold; i.e. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods
