Brian MacMahon, M.D., Stella Yen, M.D., Dimitrios Trichopoulos, M.D., Kenneth Warren, M.D., and George Nardi, M.D.

Methods

Case-Control Interview Study

  • 369 Cases
  • Patients with histologically proved cancer of the pancreas from 11 hospitals in Boston and Rhode Island
  • 644 Controls
  • Controls were matched to cases by the same physician in the same hospital
  • Those with diseases associated with smoking, alcohol, or the pancreas were excluded
  • 273 had cancer and 371 had other diseases

Statistical Analysis

  • Calculated relative risk of pancreatic cancer based on selected variables
  • Separated the controls into those with cancer and those without, but results were similar so the controls were all grouped together
  • Stratified by:
  • Age in 10 year groups
  • Sex

Results:

  • There was no significant association shown for pipe tobacco, cigars or alcohol assumption.
  • Smoking showed a RR of 1.4 (1.1,1.9)
  • Coffee was significant with RR of 2.1 for consumers of 1-2 cups, 2.8 for 3-4 cups & 3.2 for 5 or more cups per day.

Things to consider:

  • The study was not initially designed to look at coffee consumption.
  • Controls with diseases associated with smoking and alcohol were excluded
