  • Psalm 49:15 (1440-586 B.C.) -  But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah
  • Matthew 28:2-7 - And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men.5 But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you."
  • Acts 2:22-32 - "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, "'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26  therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27  For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28  You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.‘ "Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

How the Old Testament Points to Jesus

By God

Presented through Leon Ross

The Book of Exodus

(1450-1410 B.C.)

Abraham and Isaac

Genesis 22

(1450-1410 B.C.)

The Beginning

Genesis

(1450-1410 B.C.)

The whole second book of the bible is about Jesus!!!!

EXODUS

Israel, people of God, were in slavery

Pharaoh rules as a false god

No way for Israel to liberate themselves except by the power of God Himself

God comes and invites Pharaoh to repent

Pharaoh refuses time and time again, God still gives more chances

God decides He will not tolerate this kind of injustice

The payment for Pharaoh's sin is death

Death passes over that which is covered by the blood of the lamb

God provides a way out. The death of a lamb will save.

Faith by blood and sacrifice

God delivers Israel from Egypt into the promised land

JESUS

We as humans are slaves to sin

Everyone has a god they follow, either Jesus, themselves or a created thing

There is no way to be free from sin, apart from Jesus

God comes and invites everyone to realize they are sinners, repent of their sins, and believe and walk with Jesus.

We all refuse and turn away from God, yet He is still patient.

There comes a point when true justice has to be served.

The payment of sin is always death.

Jesus provided himself as the sacrifice for sin to those who believe and follow Him.

For the people who have faith and grab the outreached hand of God, they will be saved from the consequence of sin which is death.

God will deliver you to eternal life with Him, which will be completely GOOD!!!!

Brief Overview of the Bible

Let’s Get to It!!!!

Jesus in the Old Testament

  • The Ways that Jesus is in the OT
  • Christopanies – Appearances of Jesus in the OT
  • Example: Appeared to Moses as I AM, Jesus claims He is I AM
  • Types – Representative figures, institutions, events that foreshadow Jesus coming and what He would do
  • Example: Animal Sacrifices vs. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross
  • Analogous Service – People who do things that Jesus would ultimately complete
  • Example: Isaac carries his own word to be sacrificed by his father Abraham vs. Jesus’ carries his own cross
  • Events
  • Example: The whole story of Exodus vs. Jesus
  • Titles – Given to God in Old Testament and also Jesus in New Testament
  • Example: Son of Man in Old Testament and New Testament
  • Prophecy – Predicting/Foreshadowing/Proclaiming Jesus in the Old Testament
  • Example: Psalms 22:16 – Dogs have surrounded me, a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. (1000ish years before Jesus)

Many, many more examples for each of these.

Sacrifices

(1450-1410 B.C.)

The Law

(1450-1410 B.C.)

Jesus’ Resurrection

Jesus’ Birth

Jesus’ Ministry

Jesus’ Betrayal, Beat Down,

and Crucifixion

  • Show that the theme of the Old Testament is:
  • God loves and desires a relationship with us
  • God’s is perfect, good, and just.
  • Man is evil and it is our sin and hard hearts that keep us from His love
  • Man cannot save himself
  • God hates sin

  • Show the Old Testament points to Jesus
  • God chose to sacrifice Himself and take the punishment for our sins out of love and faithfulness to us.
  • God reconciles believers to Himself and His righteousness.
  • God will establish a new kingdom with the faithful dwelling with Him for eternity.

  • Hopefully spur, convince, encourage non-Christians to believe and Christians to not only believe (demons believe in Jesus), but to live their lives for Him by turning away from SIN.
