With booming population, by 1971 China had almost a billion citizens, with half of the populace under the age of twenty one. Because of this, China implemented the infamous one-child policy.

The one-child policy worked, or so it seemed, but now China faces a diffrent problem–too few people. The balance of people is off; a large aging population and a small youth population. This means a drop in the number of working citizens and China will have to do something about that.

But don't think this is irrelevant to us Americans. Take a look at the tag on your shirt. I bet most of them say 'Made in China'.

The one-child policy had problems, many of them, but almost 400 million births were avioded. But was it really thanks to the policy? The demographics of China had changed by the time the policy had started. That means that China's population may not have needed the policy in the first place.

But the question is out there: was the policy, with all its evils, necessary?

I had fun researching, though some of the stuff I found shocked me. I came across a story about a Chinese woman that particularly startled me.

But all in all, I found the information intriguing. I was glad to learn more about the world around me.

Overpopulation

The Heart of the Matter

China

The Beginning

This was totally acceptable. China needed a way to combat overpopulation. But the way they went about it was, and is, debatable.

The Actions

Those who followed the one-child policy were given better pay, homes, and government aid.

But those who did not were discriminated against. The same incentives that were given to those who followed the policy were withheld from those who did not. Not only that, but abortions and even sterilizations were forced upon repeat offenders.

Thanks for watching!

The Effects Now

The Research

I chose overpopulation because... Well, I just did. But as soon as I picked it, I knew that I wanted to do it over China. Again, there is not a reason why I picked it, I did it just on an impulse.

The policy is not just affecting individuals, but China as a nation, and even the world. Because males are more prized in Chinese tradition, firstborn baby girls were often abandoned or even killed.

One vilage was found to have a ratio of five boys to one girl.

Because of the imbalance, economic stress is starting to make itself known. I say 'is' because the policy is not a thing of the past but a fact of life now and the consequences are being felt all over the world.
