Creation of the Central Cultural Revolution Group

Was a replacement to the central committee secretariat and the "Five Man Group", and was directly responsible to the standing committee of the Politburo. It consisted mainly of radical supporters of Mao

Mao's first public appearance since 1962

He appeared with Lin Biao atop the Tiananmen gate on the August 18th to greet approximately 11 million Red Guards. Mao praised their efforts actions in recent campaigns to develop socialism and democracy

Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping dismissed from government

Launch of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution

1967

Launch of the 'up to the mountains and down to the villages' campaign

Mao sent certain privileged youths to the countryside to learn from the peasants and farmers there. More than 17 million high school students were sent to live in the country and did not get the opportunity to attend university.

1968

Launch of the 'Cleansing of the class ranks' campaign

Many people were detained for months or even years in temporary jails established in each work unit by the Revolutionary Committee. Torture occurred in public and behind locked doors. Those who were not able to bear the prolonged torture committed suicide. At the Girls Middle School attached to Beijing Teachers University, three teachers committed suicide.

Launch of the 'criticize Lin Biao and Confucius' campaign

The campaign produced detailed Maoist interpretations of Chinese history, and was used as a tool by the Gang of Four to attack their enemies.
