The evolution of storage device

By Dan and Dave

5.25" floppy

1976

cassette tape

1972

one of the first mass produced consumer storage devices. used for saving document and even loading operating systems. It had 1.2mb of storage.

IBM 3380

1980

once used as an inexpensive way to save data it was slowly replaced as floppies became cheaper It had 660kb of storage.

The first device to reach the gigabyte realm reaching 2.52GB of storage.

MiniDisc MD Data

1993

IBM 350

1956

Sony intended the MD Data to replace the floppy disk as the consumer storage platform of choice, but it was too expensive and eventually out placed by the more popular zip disk. they have 140mb of storage

ST-506

1980

Uniservo

1951

This was the first 5.25" drive and the precursor to the modern PC HDD with 5mb.

The first "modern" hard drive with 24 disks that spun at 1200 RPM

4.4mb of storage

CD-R

1990

Zip

1994

This format is still widely used. its large storage capacity and low price helped it surpress the floppy disk and survive the rise of zap and jaz disks. the CD-R has 700mb of storage.

This was the essential storage device for large documents and graphic design files, it quickly replaced floppy discs and was favoured over CD-R's becasue they were rewritable. They have 100mb of storage.

Seagate Barracuda

1996

DAT

1987

This was the first 7200 RPM drive, a speed that became the standard we see in most modern disks today. They have 2.25 GB of storage.

first commercially used tape drive

it had 128 bits per inch

The format was going to be a high end music recording device but later became a storage device for computers. They have 1.3GB of storage.

Drum memory

1950

IBM 170 microdrive

1999

Before flash memory was cheap and large enough for consumer electronics, these revolutionary small drives went into the first ipods apple continued using them all the way up to the new iPod classics. They have 170mb of storage.

the precursor to the modern hard drive platter.it had 10kb of memory

Williams tube

1947

IBM Disk on key

2000

SD card

2000

IBM revolutionized the way we move and store data with with this small inexpensive device. when introduced it quickly killed the floppy and zip disks and started the movement towards flash storage. They had 8mb of storage,

when introduced it gained widespread popularity in hand held devices like phones and cameras. thin as a quarter these devices are no longer restricted by the physical size of the unit. Thye have 32mb of storage

Solid-State Drive

2008

Cloud Storage

NOW

With no moving parts, faster boot times and less physical space, they are now the new way we store digital media. They have 64GB or storage.

With online services customers can access nearly limitless storage from any internet connected device.

First random access digital storage unit. its speed was 1.2 milliseconds per instruction .it had 0.625kb of memory

Punch cards

1725

In 1725 Basile Bouchon created punch cards to control looms, It was the first time a machine used a device to read physical code to preform a process
