Romeo and Juliet Literary Devices

I.ii. 14. "Earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she."Capulet explains to Paris how important Juliet is to him using this personification, which is giving an inhuman thing human characteristics. He is explaining how Juliet is so incredible important to him, for he has put all his hope in her. It is helpful to trulely portraying how highly Capulet thinks of his daughter. Juliet is everything to Capulet, so he will not force her to do anything she does not wish to do. In his eyes, Juliets wants and needs come first.

II. ii. 19. "The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars." Romeo speaks in awe of Juliets beauty to himself, using a hyperbole, which is defined as an over-exaggeration. This is used to show how invredible beautiful Romeo thinks Juliet is, he believes that her beauty is far superior to that of the stars. To him, Juliet is bright and beautiful and has the ability to combat the negative feelings he had after being rejected by Rosaline.

Hopes

I.i.172. "Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health," This is what Romeo says to Benvolio to explain his feelings. He uses oxymoron's, which are defined as a figure of speech using to obvious contradictions, to explain his pain. Shakespeare used these to his advantage, portraying how Romeo feels about his rejection from Rosaline. It shows how, even though love is a wonderful and exciting feeling, due to circumstance it is causing Romeo great pain and suffering. Although his feelings for Rosaline were initially a cause for great happiness, they have changed into the cause of his immense sadness.

II. ii. 139. " My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep." Juliet assures Romeo that she truly does love him using this simile, which is defined as a comparison using like or as. She compared the depth of her love to that of the ocean, ensuing that it is limitless and full. This is effective in showing how serious Juliet is in her love for Romeo, and how incredible true and endless her love is for him.

I. vi. 27. " If love be rough with you, be rough with love." Mercutio says these words of encouragement to Romeo before they enter the Capulet's ball. The literary device used is a personification, which is defined as giving human qualities to something nonhuman. This is effective because it is explaining how love has worked to hurt Romeo, but he can combat it and regain the happy parts of love. Mercutio is trying to lift Romeos spirit by informing him that he can find a love that is far superior to his former infatuation with Rosaline.

II.ii. 35. "If love be blind, love cannot hit he mark." Mercutio explains this to Benvolio using a personification, which is defined as giving human characteristics to something that is inhuman. Mercutio is explaining how, when you love someone enough, you no longer see to reason or proper judgement. Romeo is going after Juliet, who is the daughter of his families enemy. This creates a very real risk of war and battle between their two families, but because Romeo is so in love with Juliet, he does not see the possibly catastrophic consequences.
