Chapter 8 Continued

• Bernard asks John if he would like to go to London with him.
• Bernard has a secret motive by bringing John back with him. He wants to embarrass the Director by saying he is John's father.
• John accepts the offer only if Linda can come along with them.
• Bernard says he will go try to get permission to bring them with him.
• John then is ecstatic and is optimistic about the New World.
• He asks Bernard if he is married to Lenina. Bernard laughed and says Ford no he isn't.
• Bernard tells John to not get overly excited until he sees the New World for himself.

Summary of Chapter 10

• At the hatchery, the Director speaks to Henry and tells him that he intends to dismiss Bernard in front of dozens of workers as a public example.
• The Director claims that Bernard's unorthodox behavior threatens one of the things that they as a society stand up for- stability.
• When Bernard arrives, the Director declares Bernard heretical because he refuses to behave like an infant and doesn't immediately seek to gratify his own desires.
• He tells him that he is being transferred to Iceland.
• Bernard presents Linda and John.
• Linda accuses the Director of making her have a baby and the room gets quiet.
• John falls at the Director's feet and calls him father.
• The workers begin to laugh hysterically as the Director quickly leaves the room.

Summary of Chapter 9

• Lenina is disgusted by the Reservation so she took so much soma that she incapacitated herself for 18 hours.
• Bernard flies to Santa Fe to call Mustapha Mond
• He repeats his story to a number of people before reaching the World Controller
• Mond agreed that Linda and John are a matter of scientific interest to the World State.
• He tells Bernard to get the permit from the Reservation.
• John is afraid that Bernard and Lenina left without him so he goes through the cabin through Lenin'as things and wants to touch her while she is asleep but is afraid that would defile her
• The helicopter comes back with Bernard and John leaves without being caught
