Travis County is the only urban metro area in Texas without a hospital district.

Health care services are not coordinated or consistent between city and county residents.

City and county residents pay different tax rates for indigent health care services.

There is no strategy or planning for improving or enhancing care.

Legislation is passed to allow for a hospital district in Travis County.

Local petition drive places vote on the May 2004 ballot.

2004

Travis County Hospital District (TCHD) is created by a vote.

Travis County and City of Austin transfer their tax bases to TCHD.

TCHD assumes responsibility for levying taxes to finance health care.

TCHD receives ownership for Brackenridge/Children’s Hospital, Austin Women’s Hospital and 14 Community Health Centers.

Board of managers is appointed (four by City Council, four by County Commissioners, one jointly).

2005

Patricia A. Young Brown becomes the first president and CEO.

Grand opening of the newly expanded Brackenridge Hospital Emergency Department.

2007

$1 million capital investment is made at Brackendridge to enhance trauma services.

Additional $900,000 approved to increase inpatient mental health services at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital.

2008

Board of managers votes to purchase the Braker Lane property to serve 20,000 patients per year.

TCHD initiated development of a new, state-of-the-art health center.

TCHD rolls out competitive employment package for transitioning city employees.

2009

University Medical Center Brackenridge obtains Level 1 Trauma Center status.

City of Austin Health Center employees transition to TCHD.

CommUnityCare, an affiliated non-profit FQHC system, is created.

TCHD contracts with United Way for customer service call center.

The Travis County Healthcare District changes its name to Central Health.

2010

Central Health creates contract with the SIMS Foundation to fund mental health services for local musicians.

Central Health Connection is launched to begin community conversations about the current state of and hopes for health care in central Texas.

Construction begins on the new North Central Health Center on Braker Lane at Parkfield Drive.

2011

Central Health creates Sendero Health Plans, a nonprofit health management organization (HMO).

White paper entitled Health and Health Care Trends & Innovations in Central Texas is released.

Construction on CommUnityCare North Central, located at Braker Lane and Parkfield Drive, is completed.

2012

Central Health enters into a letter of intent with Seton Healthcare Family to create Community Care Collaborative.

Travis County voters approve Proposition One to increase tax rate to fund Dell Medical School and Community Care Collaborative.

Central Health becomes anchor entity for Regional Health Partnership 7 in the 1115 Medicaid Transformation Waiver.

2013

Planning and community outreach for the Southeast Health & Wellness Center begins.

Board of Managers approves Master Agreement with Seton Healthcare Family,

establishing the CCC.

Terms are established for the Dell Medical School, new teaching hospital, and Integrated Delivery system.

Central Health launches FY14-16 Strategic Plan.

2014

2-1-1 Health Connect is launched to help Central Texans get health coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Renovation and construction begins on Southeast Health & Wellness Center.

Dr. Clay Johnston selected as the inaugural Dean of the Dell Medical School.

Psychiatric Emergency Department at UMCB opens.
