Why the smoke is so harmful

Lung cancer

The effects of smoking on the lungs and associated tissues

A harmful chemical within the cigarette is carbon monoxide, which is TOXIC, for it reduces the blood's capacity to carry oxygen. Carbon Monoxide is a major cause of heart disease.

  • Why the smoke is so harmful

There is lots of evidence connecting smoking with lung cancer. There was a test showing there were 50 times more people that smoked with lung cancer that those who didn't.

Nicotine contains at least 17 chemicals that are known to cause cancer. They contained in the tar that is collected in smoker's lungs, thus causing lung cancer.

Fun facts

  • 13 million people smoke in the UK - 28% men and 26% women
  • In the UK, it kills around 120,000 per year
  • Among 15 year olds (our age), 21% of boys and 25% of girls are regular smokers
  • More than 80% of smokers take up the habit as teenagers
  • In the UK, 450 children take up smoking every day

Optimum conditions for gas exchange

  • Air passages need to be clear
  • Needs to be free from dirt particles and bacteria
  • Needs the biggest surface as possible in contact with blood

Smoking upsets all of these

By Nadia and Laura

The effects of smoking on the lining of the air passages

  • The lungs are kept free from dirt and bacteria by the cilia
  • However, the chemicals in the smoke destroy the cilia
  • Thus, the mucus is not swept away from the lungs, blocking air passages
  • Smoke irritates the lining of the airways, stimulating cells to secrete more mucus, causing more blockage, which is shown by the smoker's cough

Effects of smoking during pregnancy

The smoke prevents her unborn child from receiving the vital oxygen needed, thus causing the mass of the baby at birth being lower and the development of the baby being hindered.

Emphysema

Thank you for listening!!!!

Emphysema, a lung disease which kills 20,000 in Britain each year, is caused the smoke. It damages the walls of the alveoli, which break down and fuse together again, creating irregular air spaces, reducing the surface area, which is needed for gas exchange.

The blood of the person carries less oxygen, and in serious cases, they are unable to carry out even walking.

There is no cure for emphysema.
