- 6th-8th century- Japan accepted Buddhism and started schools
- Buddhism spread throughout all of Asia
- People in East Finland gained knowledge of the Religion
- Was mainly known in Asia and Europe until more Modern times
Zen Buddhism-
- Based on meditation to achieve happiness and enlightenment
Pure Land Buddhism-
- Based on repetition of the name Buddha Amitabha to keep Buddha's name living
- In the 1800's, places like France, Netherlands, and Italy had people traveling East and discovering Buddhism
- Began to spread throughout the world in the 1950's and 60's
- Shared by traveling Philosophers, Artist, and Asian immigrants
- 1st Century B.C. -Made it's way back into China along trade routes from Central Asia
- Schools were re-enstated in secret
- There were multiple types of Buddhism growing

WHAT IS BUDDHISM?
Buddhism is a religion originated in India. It consists of many traditions and beliefs. It was founded by Buddha who believed not in gods but in finding nirvana and peace on your own.

- Buddhism was discovered by Indian Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century BC
- He adopted it as a way of life
- Sent out Missionaries to share Buddhism with surrounding cultures (Asia, China, Korea)
- Buddha saw hate and sorrow in the world
- Was determined to fix things
- Found a pipal tree and meditated to fight off worldly temptations
- Meditation lasted 40 days
- Began to teach others what he had discovered
- Continued to teach for 45 years until he died in 483 B.C.E
- Southeast Asia and the Middle East
- People from there began to teach it to places like East Asia and China
- From China to Places like Tokyo and Korea
- After Buddha died, the religion was no longer spreading
- Only people who were taught Buddhism during the lifetime of Buddha used these ways
- For almost 200 years, Buddhism was outweighed by Hinduism
- Originated in Northern India
- Founded from Gautama Buddha (Siddhartha Buddha)
- Saw hate and sadness in the world-went to seek a cure
- Began to teach his discoveries in late 2nd century BC
- Began to spread in 3rd Century BC
