WHAT IS BUDDHISM?
Buddhism is a religion originated in India. It consists of many traditions and beliefs. It was founded by Buddha who believed not in gods but in finding nirvana and peace on your own.
WHERE DID BUDDHISM COME FROM?
- Buddhism was discovered by Indian Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century BC
- He adopted it as a way of life
- Sent out Missionaries to share Buddhism with surrounding cultures (Asia, China, Korea)
- Buddha saw hate and sorrow in the world
- Was determined to fix things
- Found a pipal tree and meditated to fight off worldly temptations
- Meditation lasted 40 days
- Began to teach others what he had discovered
- Continued to teach for 45 years until he died in 483 B.C.E
- Southeast Asia and the Middle East
- People from there began to teach it to places like East Asia and China
- From China to Places like Tokyo and Korea
- After Buddha died, the religion was no longer spreading
- Only people who were taught Buddhism during the lifetime of Buddha used these ways
