WORKING CONDITION OF SLAVES AND CONCLUSION
The slaves were working in sugarcane. They were cultivating crops. if they showed laziness in their work, they were treated unfairly. A slave had to work on Sundays also and was obliged despite he was ill. Women were working as maids. A slave could be forced to work even without getting a compensation. Life was very tough and painful for them. The punishments they had to endure were seriously too strict and cruel. The slaves did a lot of sacrifices for our country and they are always known in the history of our project.
Slaves were severely punished. Life was very hard for them. The punishment was inhuman. The masters cut one ear of the slaves when they tried to escape and the thigh for the second mistake. Their masters were toturing them badly. They were being whipped when they did not want to work. They were being branded, their shoulders were marked with a hot iron in the form of fleur de lys. If third time despite the warnings of their masters, they did a mistake or tried to run away, they were killed. The slaves were always treated like animals and some even commited sucide as they could not bear the harsh punishment of their masters. Life was really difficult for them.
Slaves were considered as a piece of furniture and not as human beings by their masters. The slave himself or herself is an object. A slave can be bought, sold, hired or pawned. A slave can be seperated from his or her family. Slaves did no have the right to marry. The children of the slaves were the property of their masters. A slave can be forced to work even without being paid. The slaves had to right over their property. Slaves can't sell sugar cane without the permission of their masters. A slave can be killed by its master if the latter don't abide by the rules of code noir. A slave must not carry weapons without the permission of their owners.
LIVING AND WORKING CONDITION OF SLAVES IN MAURITIUS
Governor Charles Isidore Decean surrended isle de France to the British on 3 December 1810 and the British named it Mauritius again. Robert Farquhar, an official of the British East India Company was appointed as the governor during the 2oth century. The british brought slaves from India, Madagascar and Africa. There was a set of rules called the code noir that the slaves had to abide by and that was created by the british. Life was very difficult for the slaves in Mauritius.
