The Return of the Democrats 1932-1968

The Era of Democrats 1800-1860

  • 1932: Franklin D. Roosevelt, democrat, elected
  • 1935: Social Security Act is passed.
  • 1954: Brown vs Board of Education case decided. Court rules segregation unequal and unconstitutional.
  • 1962: Cuban Missile Crisis occurs. Kennedy and Khrushchev go to the brink of war before Khrushchev agrees to remove its missile sites from Cuba.

  • 1819: McCullough vs. Maryland Supreme Court case decided.
  • 1820: Missouri Compromise admits Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state.
  • 1833: The Whig Party is formed. The Whig Party brought the first opposition to Democrats during the Era of Good Feelings.
  • 1854: Dred Scott vs. Sanford Supreme Court decision says Congress doesn't have the right to ban slaves in states and that slaves are not citizens.

The Era of the Republicans 1860-1932

  • 1968: Richard Nixon, republican, elected president.
  • 1981: Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first woman Supreme Court Justice. Reagan appointed her in an effort to appease the feminist movement.
  • 2000: George W. Bush, republican, elected. Al Gore is the first nominee since 1888 to win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote and thus presidency.
  • 2001: Terrorists attack the World Trade Center and Pentagon. These attacks set the stage for the Wars on Terror that would soon be waged against Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • 1865: Thirteenth Amendment ratified. This amendment prohibited slavery in the U.S.
