aesthetics: a branch of philosophy that studies beauty and the arts.

avant-garde: new and unusual or experimental ideas.

beauty: a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, esp. the sight.

canon: a collection or list of sacred works accepted as genuine.

catharsis: the cleansing effect of emotions.

disinterested: what distinguishes aesthetic judgements from personal states

forgeries: a fake, or illegitimate copy of art

form versus content: the battle between how a piece looks, and what it say

kitsch: unoriginals, a knock-off

mimesis: greek for imitation

  • Somebody who goes to the movies for the sole purpose to be a tear jerker and comes out with a good cry.
