The courage that my mother had

Went with her, and is with her still:

Rock from New England quarried;

Now granite in a granite hill.

The golden brooch my mother wore

She left behind for me to wear;

I have no thing I treasure more:

Yet, it is something I could spare.

Oh, if instead she'd left to me

The thing she took into the grave!-

That courage like a rock, which she

Has no more need of, and I have.

Speaker: The author of the poem, Edna St. Vincent Millay

-The author probably is not the most courageous person in the world

"That courage like a rock, which she / has no more need of, and I have."(11 & 12)

There seems to be no intended audience, however it does seem to be a thought in the author's mind

Setting: New England

"Rock from New England quarried"(3)

Diction:

-"Brooch"(5)- Rather than using pin, the author used a more complex and educated selection of words.

-"Courage like a rock..."(11)- Author used these words because she is comparing courage to an unbreakable rock.

Symbols:

-"That courage like a rock, which she..."(11)

The rock stands for courage, and that courage is unbreakable

Conclusion:

-The poem may inspire others

to become more courageous, or

spend more time with family

to develop a unique personality of their own.
