The Park was established on March 26, 1971, by virtue of Proclamation No. 835 issued by the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
Formerly known as the St. Paul Subterranean National Park.
The PPUR officially represented the Philippines in the global search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Pres. Benigno S. Aquino signed proclamation No. 182 on June 3, 2011 declaring a national and international campaign for the PPUR. This united Filipinos here and abroad who solidly supported the campaign and voted for inclusion of the Philippines to such a prestigious list. In 1988, in response to a strong campaign by scuba divers and environmentalists, and with the endorsement of the Provincial Government of Palawan, then President Corazon Aquino declared Tubbataha as a national marine park – the first of its kind in the country.

In 1993, Tubbataha was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It was recognised as one of the Philippines’ oldest ecosystems, containing excellent examples of pristine reefs and a high diversity of marine life.
In 1999 Tubbataha was inscribed on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance.
Among the reasons cited were the outstanding variety of species present in Tubbataha and its important role as a habitat for fish, reptiles, invertebrates and water-birds.

Tubbataha’s dive season is just three months long, running from mid-March until mid- June. At this time of year diving conditions are usually optimum – clear skies, calm seas and visibility between 30 and 45 meters.
From Manila, divers take one of the regular flights to Puerto Princesa. Dive operators usually transport their guests from the airport to the pier, just minutes away, where their boat awaits.
It takes around 10 hours to get to the Park from Puerto Princesa. Most dive boats leave after dinner and arrive in Tubbataha early the next morning. Some slower vessels leave the wharf earlier in order to arrive at Tubbataha by first light.

Reef Manta Rays
Philippines’ first record of Manta alfredi
In 2012, using data collected by research volunteer consultant Dr Terry Aquino, marine scientist Dr Will White confirmed that the Manta Rays in Tubbataha are Manta alfredi, a reef based species, rather that Manta birostris, a pelagic species roaming the open seas.
