What happens to milk when you add

food coloring and dish soap to it?

1. First, measure 100ml of milk

2. Next, pour the milk into the pie tin.

3. Then, put two drops of each food color into the milk.

4. After, dip a Q-tip into some dish soap

5. Finally, dip the Q-tip into the milk

I can identify tools scientists use and

explain why they use them.

Measuring Cup

Tape Measure

A Measuring Cup measures the volume of a liquid, or some solids like sugar, sand, or dirt.

Ruler

Tape measures, rulers and yardsticks

measure how long, how tall, how deep

or how wide, something is.

Yardstick

Graduated Cylinder

A Graduated Cylinder measures the volume of a liquid, or some solids such as sugar, sand, or dirt.

Learning target:

I can identify the Scientific Method and explain how and why it is used.

unit of measure= milliliters (ml)

Thermometer

Thermometer: What did you observe?

A thermometer's unit of measure is degrees.

A thermometer measures the temperature of an object.

The temperature on

this thermometer is

______ degrees.

investigation

"I observed_________"

Scale

A scale measures weight (how heavy something is,) and mass (how much space it takes up.)

Unit of measurement is:

  • ounce (oz.)
  • pound (lb.)

Spring scale

An investigation is a formal system of

studying something

data

When you infer you use clues AND

what you already know to make a hypothesis.

A chart is a display that organizes data into columns and rows.

Evidence is data that a scientist uses to prove

that a hypothesis is right, or wrong.

How Can You Measure ...?

Data is the information you get when you perform an experiment .

Learning target:

I can identify the right tool to measure an object and use the appropriate unit of measure to

record the data.

Language target:

I can read the unit of measure and in writing, record the data.

Heart Rate in Beats Per Second

1. Pour water into a dish

2. Sprinkle pepper on the water

3. Make a hypothesis: How does dipping your finger into the water, effect the pepper?

4. If you cover your finger in dish soap, how will it affect the pepper?

5. If you cover your finger in hair gel, how will it affect the pepper?

After you observe and analyze, you make a final decision, or conclusion.

When you analyze, you study something

closely and carefully

6. hypothesis

A hypothesis is an idea or explanation that can be tested by an investigation

When you observe, you collect information

by using your five senses.

WHY does an octopus

camoflage itself?

HOW does it change color?

What is your hypothesis?

Learning target:

I can identify and explain what scientists do.

Language target:

"Maybe that's

the answer..."

I can identify and explain what scientists do,

verbally and in writing.

A hypothesis is your idea of what will happen and why you think it will happen.

Models help us understand things that are too big, too small, or too dangerous to do or observe.

1. Identify the problem

2. Gather information

3. Create a Hypothesis

4. Do an Experiment

5. Analyze the data

6. Draw a conclusion

7. Re-test

What is Science?

In an oral discussion I can explain why

A scientist is someone who studies

the natural world.

The suffix -ist shows that a person is an expert,

studies something.

The scientific method is a way to identify a problem, gather important data, make a hypothesis using the data and then test the hypothesis.

Let's Perform an Experiment!

Are iguanas herbivores or carnivores?

Let's Compare

An experiment is a test that demonstrates how

one thing causes another thing to happen.

Experiment #1:

Sharpen some pencils. Make them pointy.

1.

2. Fill a plastic bag with water. Fill the bag almost to the top.

3. While one person holds the bag of water, the other person sticks

a pencil ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE BAG.

4. DO NOT REMOVE THE PENCIL WHEN IT IS THROUGH THE BAG.

Did anything surprise you?

How does a thermometer show the temperature of an item?

Is it important to follow directions during and experiment?
