Stress is "a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances".

Our definition: Stress is the physical response to events that make our bodies feel threatened, uneasy, or upset.

What are some symptoms of stress? When our bodies are stressed,they release high levels of stress regulating hormones and neurotransmitters like cortisol, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine and serotonin.

When homeostasis is not maintained, then a variety of psychological and physiological disturbances occur. Those with an imbalance of neurotransmitters are at extremely high risk of addiction to drug, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar and carbohydrates.

Stress causes:

  • Increases heart rate
  • Stroke Volume
  • High blood pressure
  • Dilated pupils
  • Suppresses immune system
  • Increased breathing rate

Stress can cause a person to have depression, exhaustion, and anxiety

Stress has been called “the silent killer”

Stress is linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, liver cirrhosis, and suicide.

Stress alters the neurochemical makeup of the body which can caused missed periods in women and erectile dysfunction in men.
