Q1: Use/Challenge/Develop Conventions

Uses Conventions of Real Media Products

Develop Conventions of Real Media Products

The magazine contents uses several conventions of realistic media products due to the fact it possesses several different things that are found on real life magazine, indicating the magazine is professional to help attract its TA.

Something it includes is sell lines. These multiple sell lines are often found on front covers of real magazine products to help give the buyer a better understanding of what is inside and is what catches there eye. They help attract the specific target audience as because the contents of the sell lines are related to the genre. This helps inform the audience of what is within the magazine and will help them know the genre of the magazine instantly

The contents of the text I used developed conventions as things such as Top 10 and Most Wanted Tours aren't a common thing in magazine as they may just focusing on what is actually happening currently in the music industry rather than on what the target audience believes and what could happen in the future. These things help make this magazine stand out when compared to other music magazines. The reason for this is because it is something unique that stands out and acts as a selling point, attracting the target audience to this product over others.

I developed usual conventions of a music magazine. The reason for this was to make it possible for the product to appeal more to the target audience. The masthead develops conventions of real life products because it states and puts emphasis on the exact genre of magazine by saying 'Just'. This tells the target audience it is only that and won't involve other things that aren't related to this topic. It helps make the magazine seem like it has more focus and interest in bringing the target audience exactly what they want.

A final way i developed common conventions was the positioning and sizing of the headline on the double page spread. I made it so it is fairly stretched across the page a flows across the 'gutter' of the magazine to show the importance of the article to the target audience as it is bigger than what is usual. It develops common conventions because what is found in magazines is that the article header is usually on one page rather than two, so by using the common convention of an article headline, i have developed it by structuring and laying it out in a different way. I decided to do this because i took inspiration from a double page spread that i analyzed during my research phase of the task.

My Double Page Spread uses common conventions to ensure professionalism is achieved. The first is the columns of text. My DPS has just two columns of text going down the left hand side of the page. The columns make sure the DPS looks like it is supposed to be a magazine as it looks professional because nearly every magazine, if not all, use downwards columns for their text.

The second use of conventions of real media products on my DPS is the large headline that informs the audience of what the article is about. These are found on the majority of articles within magazines, to make sure the audiences know the basics of what the contents of the page is and allows them know if they are on the correct page or not.

Finally, the large image which covers the majority of the page is another convention of real media products that i have used. In most real life magazines, DPS' possess a large image of the subject of the story. They're commonly used to help give the text a back up and help give a visual relationship with the target audience, more importantly, making the DPS look professional.

The barcode with price and date is also common conventions of a magazine. These all help the target audience know about the magazine, how recent it is and how much it is. It attracts the target audience as price is important to consumers of media products so by having a suitable price, it helps persuade them more to buy it. They help them know that what they're buying is reliable and accurate articles.

The contents page, it also uses many common conventions of a real media products. To start with it includes page numbers directly alongside the article description, which is often found in real magazines as it helps make the experience for the reader better, as they are able to locate and navigate around the magazine easier to read what they want to. Another common

Another convention of magazines that i used on the contents page is multiple images of certain articles within the magazine. More specifically, it featured a larger image was to further advertise the main article along side the main image on the front cover. These images are common conventions of a contents page as it gives the target audience a visual idea of what certain articles are about and contributes to them deciding whether they want to read that page or not.

The final use of a common magazine convention on my contents page is the caption on the images. This convention links in with the one above, as it helps give the target audience a better understanding of the image and that particular article. It is used to help the target audience, get a feel and information for what is involved in that article or picture, without giving too much away, to leave them wanting to read on in the magazine.

The large image uses common conventions as it covers the page, which is usually found on most magazines. This, and also the direct mode of address will allow the target audience to relate to the magazine and help persuade them to buy it as they are able to get a full feel of his emotions and facial expressions.

Challenge Conventions of Real Media Products

The particular genre I used, being rap, challenges conventions, because it is a specific, niche audience, rather than a broad, mass scale magazine for music in general. This allows the magazine to attract a smaller, tighter group of certain people interested in just rap, I have portrayed this challenge by using the image I did. This challenges conventions as it is a rebellious, bring it on pose that indicates no fear in the artist, this allows the target audience to relate and know the magazine is rap specific as they are associated with each other.

My magazine challenges common conventions of magazines as I made it appeal mainly to males which challenges real media products as it is unusual for music magazine to only attract one gender. I did this by focusing on using male artists names and images on the front cover, contents page and DPS. I did this because female rappers are rare and rap is more associated with male artists than females, meaning males to be more able to relate to this particular genre of music, which caused me to focus my product on males.

The variety of colors throughout my magazine is very minimal which challenges conventions of magazines. This is because real life magazines, usually have a wider range of colors used, so they are able to attract a wider range of people and also make the product stand out. I decided to use mainly two colors, which help attract my target audience as they are colors associated with males more than females, meaning this will catch their eye. Also, using these two colors throughout helps me follow the house style by making each production look like they are from the same magazine. This contributes to making the magazine look better overall as it looks professional like a real life media product.
