Ergonomics of the workplace and work environment

ERGONOMICS IN THE OFFICE

SOME EXAMPLES ARE:

In all fields of activity, whether industrial, administrative or management, the reading of information presented on screens has had a prominent development that has been expanded considerably by the generalization of computer use.

The study of this type of work must be multidisciplinary since it must take into account the visual environment and lighting, dynamic and acoustic conditions, analysis and study of anthropometric data, furniture specifications (screen, keyboard, seat, printer) , etc.

Visual display.

A display screen is an apparatus which generates images, formed by dots or stripes on a fluorescent screen, produced by the action of a cathode ray beam originating inside the corresponding tube. Generally the data is offered by alphanumeric characters and symbols.

Why is Ergonomics important?

Visual distance

The display, keyboard, and written documents used by the display screen operator should be at a similar distance from the eyes, respectively, to avoid visual fatigue.

The optimum visual distance should be between 450 and 550 mm, with a maximum of 700 mm for exceptional cases.

Visual angle.

The optimum visual angle for the display screen operator to operate in a seated position must be between 10 ° and 20 ° below the horizontal.

The chair.

The chair must have five feet and wheels to facilitate its movement. The seat must be very flexible, it must be located between 38 and 48 cm from the floor and should measure 40 cm deep, the backrest should measure from 20 to 30 cm and should be adjustable backwards. The operator must have a footrest, perfectly adjustable at three different heights.

- Ergonomics is important in the workplace because it's common for injury and/or illness can also affect how well you do your job

What is ergonomics?

Keyboard

The keyboard should be mobile, with matte keys, easy to clean and slightly curved (concave).

- Office ergonomics can help you be more comfortable at work. It also can help lower stress and injury caused by awkward positions and repetitive tasks

Ergonomics is an applied science concerned with the process of designing or arranging workplaces, products and systems so that they fit the people who use them.

Lighting.

Working with display screens requires not too bright illumination to avoid glare.

Noise.

The tolerable noise level should be 55 d8 (A)

Thermal environment.

A good thermal environment is where the dry temperature is 19 to 24ºC and humidity from 40 to 70% (ideally between 55 to 65%)

The application of ergonomics reports many obvious benefits; In particular eliminates or reduces musculoskeletal accidents, which are injuries to muscles, tendons, nerves and soft tissue.
