The scales can be treated with special creams and shampoos, as well as cortisone creams. The best treatment for Pityriasis Steatoides is econazole nitrate. This is a spray formula that is applied twice a day.
The skin is in a continual renewal process. This renewal takes place every twenty-one to twenty-four days. During this process, new scalp cells are being formed, as old skin cells are being shed. If your scalp has the proper moisture balance, the oils secreted from the sebaceous glands assist in regulating this exfoliation process. Flaking and itching occurs when the body's moisture balance is out of sync and the exfoliation process does not happen at the normal rate. This type of imbalance can appear in two forms: Pityriasis Capitus Simplex and Pityriasis Steatoides. Pityriasis Simplex is flaking with symptoms of an itchy scalp with small white flakes/scales, usually as a result of an under active oil gland. While Pityriasis Steatoides is diagnosed by oily scalp residue and flaking, it is usually attributed to an over-active oil gland.

Pityriasis steatoides is more severe case of dandruff characterized by an accumulation of greasy or waxy scalp scales, mixed with sebum, that stick to the scalp to the scalp in crusts. When accompanied by redness and inflammation the medical term is seborrheic dermatitid.
Flaking and itching can be triggered by many internal and external factors: Allergic reactions, dietary deficiencies, product residue (i.e.: styling products, shampoos, hair sprays) hormonal changes, illness, infrequent shampooing, or from scalp conditions that are either extremely dry or excessively oily. Emotional stress can also aggravate scalp dryness often causing itching and irritation. Flaking and dry scalp conditions are often a seasonal disorder- most prevalent during the cold, dry winter months. All of these factors can produce annoying flakes and itching of delicate scalp tissues. If your flaking or itchy scalp persists for more than 3 weeks or your scalp becomes irritated or severely itchy, see your doctor. It is very important to make sure that the symptoms are not caused by an underlying scalp disease or skin infection.
.Pityriasis Steatoides presents as crusted skin lesions characteristic of seborrhoea. Exfoliation is more profuse than with normal skin. Odour may exist. The scales have a custard appearance with a waxy/sticky texture. The underlying skin may be inflammatory (pink/red). There may be a visible boarder exhibiting similarities to Pityriasis Circinata. Sufferers include residents of hot humid climates and those who perspire heavily. Excessive production of sebum aids fungus proliferation. PS may affect the scalp, also the nose, ears, eyebrows, central chest andback area. Pityriasis Stetoides is non-contagious.
