*We would like to thank Mr. Walker for assisting us with this project.

*He allowed us to use this topic and research it

*We thank him for allowing us to use the ant farms, vacuums and space for making this project.

The contamination of MTBE in Groundwater

Discussion and Conclusion

RESULTS

Methods

*The purpose of this study was to see if MTBE can contaminate the groundwater

*In our results, the pH levels did not change much until our last trial

*Improvements on this experiment would be--

*More MTBE substance (Vinegar)

*Groundwater model more stable so that it couldn't leak

*Bigger vial so that way the water couldn't get in vacuum.

Materials

We thank the following addresses for helping us learn more about MTBE and how it effects our groundwater today.

*Gloria , W. (1999). Mtbe studies. California: LLNL. DOI: 1.https://www.llnl.gov/str/Happel.html

*M. Winterberg, E. Schulte-Korne, U. Peters, F. Nierlich "Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether" in Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 2010, Wiley-VCH, Weinheim.

*We got our groundwater model and taped up the sides to keep water in the model.

* We grabbed our materials such as vials, beakers, and vinegar.

*Connected tubes from the model to the vacuum hose and faucet to keep a consistent flow of water.

*Applied vinegar to the sand so that it could dissolve through time and get into the water system.

*After every five minutes going up to 15 minutes, we got a water sample and collected our data.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

*When we began our experiment we used the following to help get our results...

*Vinegar

*water

*Beakers

*Spoon

*Lab Quest Unit

*pH Probe

*Groundwater Model

*Lab’s Vacuum

*Faucet

*MTBE is an organic compound with a chemical formula (CH3) (Carbon Hydrogen) COCH3. (Carbon, Oxygen, Another Carbon and 3 Hydrogen atoms)

*Full name: Methyl tert-butyl ether

* It is a flammable, colorless, liquid.

*MTBE is used as a component in fuel for gasoline engines.

*But at the same time it can find its way into ground water and leak into the drinking water.

*There’s a widespread problem in this country of MTBE contamination. It takes very little contamination and since it’s so easy to cause a problem it’s very difficult and expensive to clean up.
