Lennies puppy

"Slowly, like a terrier who doesn't want to bring a ball to its master, Lennie approached, drew back, approached again."

The puppy symbolizes the dependency the characters have on other characters. Lennie is ultimately dependent on George just like the Puppy is on him. Thus continuing the ongoing theme of companionship.

George and Lennies farm

The Mouse

" Blubbering like a baby! Jesus Christ A big guy like you?"

"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place....With us it ain't like that. We got a future.... An' why? Because...because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that's why."

The mice symbolize the fraglity of human/ Lennie. Lennie is clearly a very large man and has a mental disability; However for such a large man his dreams seem unattainable furthering his sensitivity. All Lennie wants out of his life is to have a farm with animals and his best friend.

In many works of literature the author puts in the idea of the "American dream" and often times it is unattainable. The farm is what this is a symbol of- George knows it is not going to happen. Yet, he feeds Lennie the stories of it; because it gives Lennie somthing to hold onto.

There are loads of examples of symbolism in Of Mice and Men. Some to more extent than others but all very important in the understanding of the novella.

Candys Dog

"if you want me to- Ill put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with. Ain't nothing left for him."

This is symbolism of the barbarity of man; Carlson is trying to persuade candy to let him kill his one companion who he has had since he was a "pup". Calrson was doing it for his personal gain-the dog illustrates the importance of companionship in the story.
