Social Effects of Rock and Roll: Fashion

1960's Menswear

1960's Women's Wear

-The Beatles, with their early 1960's image of mop-top haircuts and mod suits, created a flamboyant, yet clean cut look.

- By the late 1960s, rock artists such as Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones had changed the look to flared jeans, tight T-shirts and psychedelic shades.

The creation of Rock and Roll has had many impacts on fashion throughout the decades. When Rock and Roll evolved, the fashion evolved with it. Music has always been a big influence on fashion and will continue to be for the years to come.

-Mini skirts were invented and became popular (Thank you Mary Quant)

-Shift-style box dresses were in

- PVC, Sequins, and fluorescent colors were in every Mod Girl's closet

-Young women wore their hair either straight and long, or short and sleek in a rounded bob.

1980's Women's Fashion

1950's Women's wear

-Full skirts in bright colors become popular for dancing

-skirts and pants were pinched in at the waist to emphasize the waist and bust

-Bright colored accessories like sunglasses, bangles and hoop earrings

-Teased hair, loud makeup and neon were an important part of this style.

1970's Menswear

Glam rock is a style of rock and pop music which was performed by singers and musicians like David Bowie who wore outrageous clothes, makeup and hairstyles. And usually wore platform-soled boots and glitter.

Men wore wide lapels, wide legged or flared trousers, and vests.

Neckties became wider and bolder, and shirt collars became long and pointed

1980's Menswear

-Rock Bands such as Bon Jovi, Poison, Metallica, and Michael Jackson almost went back to the "Glam Rock" era with their wildly teased hairstyles and loud clothing

1950's Menswear

-Elvis Presley was the major fashion icon for young men in the 1950's.

-His slicked back 'duck tail' hair style and long sideburns became a trademark look for rock n roll listeners.

-Young men began to wear brighter colors, sharp, flashy suits, and loose, unbuttoned shirts with upturned collars.

- Men wore leather studded jackets, slouchy and oversized tops to mimic Jackson

- Men also wore t-shirts. leather/spandex pants and torn jeans often with a bandana around their massively teased hair and studded boots on their feet to mimic Poison or Metallica

1970's Women's Fashion

-Women began wearing flowing skirts and pants

-bright, flamboyant colors were used

-bell bottoms

-towards the end of the seventies, everything went to skin tight and earth toned

Two Main Points:

1. Many of the evolving fashions were because of a Rock and Roll Icon and the major fashion changes were with menswear.

2. Music and Fashion are closely linked
