What SL230 Taught Me
Stereotypes & Assumptions
- I was raised to allow anyone to be whoever they desire to be
- I'm an ally
- Treat others with respect
- Time
- Things being done to make a positive difference in the world
- People who are open-minded
- There are various issues that are often overlooked
- A lot about myself
- "Privilege exists when one group has something that is systematically denied to others not because of who they are or what they've done, but because of the social category they belong to." (Johnson 698)
- It's important to look at every situation without a filter since most people quickly make assumptions and stereotypes.
- No one is ever alone, there is always someone who's willing to help or someone who's going through the same situation.
- I'm more privileged than I thought
- To be yourself
- Each semester I've made several assumptions about each course I enroll in
- Have had prejudiced thoughts about my professors
- Have prejudiced thoughts about my peers
- Assumptions have led me to place people under stereotypes
- Stereotypes made by others about myself
