Herpes eye infection
Symptoms can include some or all of the following on the side of the affected eye: head and facial pain, a rash, ulcers, swollen eyelids, a red & painful eye, crusting of the eyelids and visual disturbances.
Conjunctivitis
- This is caused by inflammation of the mucous membrane that covers the eye and lid. This causes the eye to become red, sore and bloodshot.
- A pussy discharge is often produced which causes the eyelids to stick together.
- It often feels gritty to the person and is contagious.
Blepharitis
- The eyelid rims are red and irritated, they burn and itch and they may have an oily discharge or scaly skin around them.
- This is sometimes referred to as psoriasis of the eyelids.
Iritis
- This is an inflammatory condition affecting the iris, (the coloured part of your eye).
- It can be associated with other inflammatory conditions of the body, for example arthritis, but in most cases the cause remains unknown.
- It would be recognised by aching, painful red eye, small pupil, blurred vision and sensitivity to light.
Stye
- This condition affects the eyelid and is recognised as a red, inflamed lump on the eyelid, which can cause discomfort.
- It is caused by a bacterial infection of the sebaceous gland or eyelash hair follicle and pus may be present.
