Members of the cult would spread the virgin mary's message of the apocolypse all across Uganda. They became really popular and there message would soon convince former priests to join the cult as a protest to the catholic church.(such as Paul Ikazire and Domonic Kataribabo)

How are they a cult?

CULT: a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.

After the church explosion leaving 530 people dead the Uganda police searched the properties of people in the movement. 4 days after the explosion the police found six half naked dead bodies sealed in concrete at the back of the Kanungu compound in Uganda. Later on the police discover 153 bodies at the compound in Buhunage then another 155 bodies at Dominic Kataribabo’s estate in Rugazi. Further investigations revealed that most of the victims had been poisoned and/or stabbed weeks before the fire. That is a total of 838 human beings dead because of this group of people which makes them a cult.

Philosophy

The movement was a break away sect from Catholicism, their main religious text was the bible. They also believed that the only way to avoid damnation in the apocalypse was to strictly follow the 10 commandments. The two main leaders Credonia and Joseph Kibweteere believed that in the year 2000 the apocalypse would wipe away the human race because of what the virgin Mary had told them in the visions they had. They took the bible and the 10 commandments quite literally.

History of the cult

The movement started in Uganda by Credonia Mwerinde's father Paulo Kashaku. In 1960 Kashaku claimed to have had a vision of his deceased daughter who told him he would have visions of heaven. In 1988 he ( Kashaku) claimed to have seen Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph. It wasn't until a year later that Credonia's father told her to spread the message that Mary told him throughout Uganda. That same year Credonia met Joseph Kibweteere who claimed to have had visions of the Virgin Mary a few years prior as well. Joseph and Credonia both agreed to spread the word of Mary's message about the Apocalypse, and how the end of the world was going to be in the year 2000, throughout Uganda. By the early 90's the movement had added 3 more leaders, in those 3 were Joseph Kasapurari, John kamagara and Dominic Kataribabo, who was a famous priest in Uganda. Dominic Kataribabo's well earned reputation as a priest combined with his phD from a university from the United states helped validate the groups message. In 1992, the group was forced to flee the village because of elders who did not agree with their message. The group then moved to the Kanungu district where they built houses, a primary school and a church for their followers, they also became wildly popular. For the reason that most of the followers are dead they do not exist today.

Beliefs

Targeted Audience

The movement started off with wanting to get the attention of the church, but then when the church did not agree with their message they branched off and decided to speak their message to locals and their future goal was to spread their message internationally.

How many followers

In 1997 the movement had 5,000 followers!!

The movement followed the 10 commandments and took them very seriously and literally. For example, the cult did not encourage communication using words, instead they used sign language to avoid breaking or going against the ninth commandment '' Thou shalt not bare false witness against thy neighbour ''. The cult did not allow their followers to have any sort of relations, as they believed that this would be a distraction and a waste of time. They also did not spend time worrying about personal hygiene and were not allowed to use soap. The movement came out with a book for their followers to study called ''A Timely Message From Heaven: The End Of Present Time''. The book went into detail about their main beliefs and what to expect close to the end.

THE LEADERS OF THE CULT:

-Credonia Mwerinde and Joseph Kibweteere were the first two leaders of the cult. Later on 3 more leaders were added. Including Joseph Kasapurari, John Kamagara and Dominic Kataribabo ( who was a famous priest in Uganda)
