Advancements

o In the Home

 Home life was made easier by the invention

of modern day appliances like: the vacuum, the dishwasher, and the pop-up-toaster.

o In the Lab

 Synthetics: A material made by chemicals to

imitate a natural product.

• Cellophane: Clear and waterproof, originally

used in the US to wrap candy bars.

• Plastics: First synthetically made from

cellulose were developed in 1862 and perfected with thermosetting by the early 1900s.

Transportation and Communication

o Transportation

 Zeppelin: Rigid German Airships, first used for

pleasure, later used by the military.

 Plane: Developed by the Wright Brothers in

1903, saw limited use in WWI

 Model T: Mass-produced and affordable, led

to suburbs in the US.

o Communication

 Telephone: Patented by Alexander Gram Bell

in 1874, allowed for the transmission of voice over long distances

 Radio: First telegraph transmitted through the

air happened in 1894

Military Power

o Weapons

 Flamethrowers: Used in WWI, shot fourth a stream

of burning fuel up to 18 meters.

 Machine Guns: Could fire 400 to 600 rounds a

minute.

 Hand Grenades: Either throw or shot, could be

detonated by impact or timer.

o Technology

 Tanks: armored support vehicles, while unreliable,

were a shock when first used on the battlefield.

 Poison Gas: Chlorine Gas was popularized by the

Germans, and later Mustard Gas was introduced to the war.

 Gas Masks: Used to filer gas out of the air, necessary

for Trench Warfare.
