Causes Of Soil Pollution
- Industrial activity - Contaminated by-products linger in soil
- Agricultural activity - Chemicals from pesticides and fertilizers reduce soil fertility and damage soil composition
- Waste disposal - Raw sewage and biological waste pollute soil and water.
- Oil spills - Chemicals contaminate soil and water
- Acid rain - Dissolve nutrients and alter soil structure.
Soil Pollution
Quiz
1. What are the main attributes to soil pollution?
2. What are the effects of soil pollution?
3. What two things speed up deforestation?
4. Explain eutrophication (properly)
Johnson, Lillian, Selina, Will, Yuki
Farming
- Farmers sometimes use fertilizers
- Provide plants with the nutrients necessary
- Eutrophication - too much fertilizer
- Excess runs into river
- Algae to overgrow
- Blocks sunlight
- Kills off the other water plants
- Bacteria breaks down the dead plants and uses up all the oxygen
- Result: river/lake is completely lifeless
Plenary
- Did we learn about what deforestation is and their effects?
- Did we learn about the speeding processes of deforestation?
- What kind of effects does eutrophication have?
- What is the point of fertilizers?
How deforestation affects
the soil
- Forest soil is supposed to be moist, but after the trees are removed, the soil is exposed to the sun which causes it to dry out.
-Many species of plants and animals have been lost or remained endangered
-the roots of these trees hold the soil together and prevents them from collapsing.n
-more carbon dioxide and less oxygen in the atmosphere
-the roots can absorb the water, but if there are no trees, then the flow of water could cause flood
Effects of Soil Pollution
- Humans - Consumption of contaminated vegetation which can cause illness.
- Plants - Plants cannot adapt to altered soil. Soil becomes prone to erosion and fertility is diminished.
- Toxic Gases - Pollute environment and can cause health issues when exposed to people
Deforestation
Starter
Analogy of mashed potato
Imagine that there is a row of broccoli in front of some mashed potato. When we remove the broccoli and add gravy the mashed potato will slide down
-Forests still cover about 30% of the world's land
-Forests as big as Panama are being cleared each
year
- The world's rainforests will be completely
cleared in a 100 years at the current rate
-Not all are intentional, some are caused by
wildfires.
This is like when we remove trees the soil will slide after rainfall.
Lesson Objectives
- Understand what deforestation is and how it affects the soil
- Understand how deforestation is accelerated
- Understand how fertilizers and other farming chemicals work
- Understand what eutrophication is
