  • The prison was structured as room the had a lower dungeon level; The only entrance was through a hole in the floor which inmates who were sentenced to death would be lowered into
  • Prisoners would be sentenced to death by either strangulation or starvation
  • This prison is believed to have held Peter and Paul

Author: Paul

Where: Paul is writing from prison

Audience: The church of Phillipi

Background: Paul was in prison because he was spreading the word of Jesus most likely in a public place and even after being imprisoned he told the gospel to other soldiers and prisoners there.

- Paul writes to express that though he is imprisoned for spreading the word of Jesus, it is all for the purpose of the Lord and to spread the Gospel. He writes obviously to praise god but also give thanks to the church that was always behind him

Philipians 1:12-18

Corpus Iurius Civilis

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[a] that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[b] and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

  • Original 'laws' was the twelve tables inscribed in 12 bronze plates and stayed a foundation.
  • Twelve tables changed to Corpus Iurius Civilis, It was written by Justinian I
  • A very important main source of Roman laws
  • These laws have shaped the way Continental Europe laws have been made
  • Main Goal: Consolidate all of the laws already put into place and eradicate the laws that were not necessary
  • This was put into 12 books and divided into 2

Cont...

  • prisons were in horrible condition
  • usually very dark, dirty, filled with lice and feces
  • Many prisoners became very ill because of the condition they were in.
  • They would usually be held in there by manacles, which were very heavy and gave the prisoners lacerations

Cultural Values

Work Cited

In understanding the background of the verse, you see the core values of the followers of Jesus. They valued the word of Christ so much, Paul was willing to be thrown in jail to spread it. Through this, Jesus allowed people who followed him so fiercely to thrive in a place full of despair and hopelessness.

Prisons in the Greco Roman World

Court System in Greco-Roman World

  • Prisons usually only held people who were sentenced to death until their time had come to be executed
  • Sometimes people would be held until the time of their trial had come
  • Some people were kept shackled up if necessary but for the most part they were just confined in a room
  • Prisoners who committed crimes that were seen as the worst crimes would be stoned, burned alive or crucified.
  • There was a huge bias towards the upper class: their punishments were a sort of 'house arrest'
  • Some prisoners were lucky and were exiled rather than executed or they were allowed to leave the prison and were exiled, but it was not very common especially for larger crimes.

Bible Aspect Of Prison

  • Laws were spread throughout the regions through statues, authoritative decisions, emperors, assembly votes and consultations of expert legal counsels.
  • Lawsuits were very rarely claimed against others.
  • In cases, a civil officer would decide whether or not a trial would proceed to trial or not.
  • If the trial was set to proceed both parties had to represent themselves.
  • The trial would be reviewed and judged all by one person.

- Jesus shows who he is through where they end up

- He figures out how to make a horrible place into a place to worship him and spread his word

- He shows to those who are faithful and faithless in the prison that he is still moving.

- Story of Peter breaking free from Prison as well as Paul spreading the word of God

- IVP compares prison to death, that it was not a bad thing.

- Through the bible aspect, prison was not an ideal place to be but it never lessened the love of God or his reach. Prison only made people love God more from a different place and that is what God intends.
