What makes a good PSA?

  • Create recognition of a topic or practice.
  • Convey that the problem is important.
  • Trigger change in behavior (stop smoking, start recycling)
  • Foster compliance with social influences or policies (Buckle up, don't drink and drive)
  • Motivate a person to talk to someone about the topic
  • Encourage further information-seeking about the topic

A Catchy Slogan that explains the point behind the campaign

PSAs are generally developed for one of three reasons:

  • to prevent a behavior from starting
  • to stop a behavior (cessation)
  • or to encourage adoption of a new behavior

Know which reason you are doing a PSA

Know your audience: if your audience is kindergartners, your ads will be drastically different than if your audience is 6th graders
