Efforts to help!
- As of June 2009 the turtle has been seen in the central part of Alabama, in the Elmore county region.
- Alabama DOT has created a fence that will keep the endangered Alabama red-belly turtles off the roads.
- The agencies involved were comended for their involvement, especially the Alabama Department of Transportation for preventing the specvies from going extinct.

Description
- About one foot in length. Females are slightly larger; upper shell length reaching 15 inches.
- color may be greenish to dark brown or black with yellowish, orangish, or reddish vertical markings along the sides.
- The under shell can be pale yellow to red; Colors or markings are usually more vibrant in younger turtles.
- The head, neck, and legs are marked with yellow striping.
- Males have elongated claws.
Cause of Endangerment
- One cause may be when females lay their eggs in a specific area near the highway, many of the females and their hatchlings are killed by nearby cars.
- From 2001-2006 it was reported that 444 Alabama red-belly turtles were kiled on the highway, of these, 101 were females with eggs.
