Ancestral Beings in aboriginal spirituality

In aboriginal spirituality ancestral beings are very important. They are the ones who created this earth from a dark, flat place for all the aboriginal communities to live on. They are spiritual guides for the present generations that connect to them though the dreaming.

Common elements of Aboriginal beliefs

What is the Dreaming and why is it important ?

How aboriginal spirituality is expressed

Some common elements of aboriginal belief are having respect for your family, the elders of you tribe and the tribe itself and respecting the life around us which includes the trees, the wildlife and the other tribes living around you. Also sharing the resources of the earth and not being selfish are other examples of common elements.

The dreaming refers to a connection in a psychic state with ancestral beings. It can also be about the period of creation at the start of the world. The dreaming doesn't actually refer to a time period in the past, present or future it is jut around the aboriginal communities at all times. The word Dreaming for aboriginals is the environment that the Aboriginal people lived in and it still exists today. For aboriginals it is the beginning of knowledge and from that came the laws that the aboriginal people follow. The dreaming is important because to the aboriginals the dreaming is their understanding of how the world came to be and how they came to be on this earth. It gave them the laws they must follow in order to survive.

WONNARUA TRIBE

  • CEREMONY- One of the ceremonies of the Wonnarua people happens when an initiated man dies. The mourners of the death then inflicted injuries on themselves and when those injuries healed the mourning stopped. Death was considered as part of the cycle of life which didn't start at birth and finish at death.
  • CELEBRATION- Celebration for all aboriginal tribes was a big part of their daily lives. They would have celebrations for all occasions and they would usually include songs, dance, food and all the tribe coming together.
  • RITUAL- One of the rituals of the Wonnarua people happens when the boys start going through the stage of puberty. They would go through multiple ceremonies to go from childhood to adulthood. The ceremonies proved their manhood, strength and separation from their mothers and the girls of the tribe.
  • DANCE- A traditional dance of the Wonnarua people is to perform in a tribal group with a possum cloak wrapped around their bodies. They would dance to music played by the remaining members of the group and the dance tells stories that have come from the dreaming.
  • STORYTELLING- One of the creation story for the Wonnarua people is about how a spirit called Baiame created the rivers and hills of the Hunter area. This story would be told down through the following generations so the knowledge is kept.
  • TOTEMS- The totem of the Wonnarua people is the wedge tail eagle. It acts like a guide for the people and when the people see a wedge tail eagle they feel like they are being watched over.
  • SONGS- The spirituality of the people was often shown through the use of music. They would use didgeridoos, two boomerangs hit together and sticks to provide the music and the tribe would sing along with the songs often being about the creation or laws that were created from the dreaming.
