Social Learning Theory and children's movies
Social Learning theory
The characters in children's movies act as role models for these kids and show them scripts for how to behave. These children imitate the behavior they see in these characters and learn heteronormative behaviors at an extremely young age
developed by Tarde states that humans learn socially through four main stages of imitation, including that of role models. (module 2 lecture notes)
Thesis:
Children's movies found in today's society reinforce heteronormative gender roles.
- These movies are not just movies from the past they are found in recent mainstream movies
Media Sample one:
Children's movies and heteronormative gender roles
Conclusion
Frozen
- This movie aligns with my thesis because it shows the feminine gender roles for women and how girly and childish they act even though they are adults
- It also shows women sensitivity to body shape and weight as depicted in the clip shown in an earlier slide
- Its shows heteronormative behaviors and how women are only allowed to be with a man and reinforces feminine heteronormalcy
Tangled
- Tangled offers partial support of my theory it shows how it reinforces heteronormality by having the main character fall in love with a man and she needs him to be happy
- It shows her saving the man at the end which going against gender norms because usually it is a masculine trait to save a women
