So, what have we learned about Toxic Masculinity?

Again, toxic masculinity is harmful to men because it increases body dissatisfaction, decreases self esteem, and makes forming relationships hard for them.

1. Reflect on the man box.

2. Express your broad range of emotions

3. Encourage others to do the same

Social Issues

The Standards

"Obtaining and maintaining status and power in society and in interpersonal interactions involves the objectification or dehumanization of others, particularly women... (Smith, Parrot, Swartout, & Tharp, 2015)."

Decreased Self Esteem

"Because of the precarious nature of manhood and the unattainable standards set by hegemonic masculinity, boys and men can experience constant fear of emasculation... (Reigeluth & Addis, 2016)."

Porter, T. (2010, December). A Call to Men. Retrieved from http://www.acalltomen.org/news/ted-talk- tony-porter

Toxic Masculinity

Increased Body Anxiety

"the set of standards our society holds for men that end up damaging both their lives and others (Weis, 2016)."

“Participants who read violent narratives exhibited greater body anxiety (M = 2.95) than did participants who read nonviolent narratives (M = 2.66). Independent of this, participants who viewed muscularity images demonstrated greater body anxiety (M = 2.97) than did participants who viewed non-muscularity images (M = 2.64) (Taylor & Fortaleza, 2016).”

The Harmful Effects of Toxic Masculinity

The Harmful Results

Presented by Taylor Schulze

The Suppression of Emotion

Toxic Masculinity can make boys and men prone to body anxiety, low-self esteem, and can therefore make it difficult for them to interact socially.

"... boys and men... learn to conform to hegemonic masculine norms, in part, to avoid punishing consequences, for example, shame and belittlement, associated with being perceived as an inferior or incompetent man (Reigeluth & Addis, 2016)."

Misogyny

The "Superhebro" Complex

American culture constantly portrays women as property and as sexual objects which men can buy and sell.

“A correlation between muscularity and aggression has been observed among action-movie protagonists; the more muscular the hero, the more aggressive his behavior (Taylor & Fortaleza, 2016).”
