Watch out for the prickles on this spike-headed katydid from the Amazon rainforest. Those spikes along the insects' legs and head can easily cut a person's skin--or tear the delicate wings of a bat. The spikes say to enemies, Better not touch! Thats why the community does´nt interact much with it.
- The spiny devil katydid has the scientific name of panacanthus cuspidatus and beongs to:
- Domain: Eukarya
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Orthoptera
- Family : Tettigoniidae
- Genus : Panancathus
- Species: Cuspidatus
Spiny katydids, native to the rainforests of Central and South America, are6.35 to 7.62 centimeters in length. Believed by scientists to be omnivorous, spiny katydids probably eat flower parts, insects and seeds. Male katydids sing by rubbing rough areas of their wings together. Female katydids listen by putting their best foot forward (their ears are located part way down their front legs). Though most tropical katydids sing only sporadically, spiny katydids sing their high pitched whistling song for most of the night.
Observers have seen the spiny katydid successfully defending itself from small monkeys and birds by batting its spiny front legs.
