"In the towns they will go to those who cannot now afford the care of trained nurses and often die for lack of it... "
"On the prairies, in the forests, in mining districts - - everywhere throughout the country - - they will go hither and thither amongst our brave pioneers and bring help to these heroic people who are building up the future of this beautiful country amidst many hardships and privations..."
-Lady Ishbel Aberdeen (1897)
In part of her establishment campaign, she asked Dr. Alfred Worcester who was a professor of hygiene at Harvard University. He founded Waltham Training School for District Nurses (Massachusetts). To help convince fellow Canadian's , he explained the importance of the idea to large audiences of doctors in Ottawa, Toronto and other cities. Worcester encouraged Miss. Charlotte MacLeod to come to Ottawa to help. MacLeod ended up being VON Canada's first chief superintendant. The first 12 nurses were admitted to the order in November 1897 and helped many miners with serious cases.
I feel that The Victorian Order of Nurses is a very important part of our history. Without them, a lot of the Canadian population would have decreased due to illness and hunger. The people benefiting most in the past were the poor and elderly looking for free health care. The poor workers would've died of disease and put a longer building period time on the work. If the worker of the family died and the family couldn't survive without them, them so would die. The families dying would've probably ended the bloodline and Canada's current population of about 35 682 794 would be almost a thousand people less. Its all cause an effect. Back then the government only cared for the rich and assisted them most. The poor were left to fend for themselves.
Lady Ishbel Aberdeen was the wife of the current governor general in Canada. She visited Vancouver in 1896 and heard of the hardships and illnesses affecting women and children in isolated areas. Later that year she attended the annual meeting of the National Council of Women where other heart wrenching stories were told. She told them her concern and they asked her to found an order of visiting nurses.

The main focus of VON was to provide community health care by going into homes to assist them. The people who befitted most from VON's work were the chronically ill and the elderly. VON felt it was better to focus on home nursing than to diversify people on their locations.
VON, in the early 1890's, tended to set up hospitals in remote areas in need of nurses, doctors and hospitals. The first VON sites were in Ottawa, Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver and Kingston. In 1898, VON set up a "cottage" hospital in Regina to provide care to settlers and early pioneers in the prairies. After successful fund raising, the second honorary president, Lady Minto opened forty-three more hospitals in both local and isolated areas throughout Canada. VON also built 44 hospitals early on, but gave them up for other organizations to run.
The Victorian Order of Nurses (or VON) is a community based organization to help aid the ill and identify health care needs.
VON was established when Queen Victoria celebrated 60 years to the throne. The original founder was Lady Ishbel Aberdeen, the wife of a Scottish politician in Canada.
